Online gift cards should be printable

Gift cards are great for a lot of reasons, and the ones in store have even become ecofriendly lately which is great – but online, instant gift cards seem to be somewhat unimproved for some time.

When I buy a gift card, I am usually buying it to put it into a card or to handover in real life.

I don’t want it emailed to the person by the retailer. That’s not only handing over data I don’t own, and don’t want to hand over, whatever it’s used for, but it’s also frought with problems. Has it gone into their junk? Have they seen it? Do they think it might be SPAM or, worse, a scam?

I know I’m not alone in this – and I know I’m not alone in creating word documents and the like to print something that looks vaguely attractive for inclusion in a card – just like if I’d bought it in a store.

But it doesn’t exist. Or, rather, it didn’t. Thanks to ChatGPT, and my mediocre HTML skills, I’ve created a solution for myself (and you can use it too): the Gift Card Creator. You can find it right here, in the “tools” section of my site.

The site is pure HTML and javascript, so it doesn’t save anything and you can inspect all the code to check that I’m not stealing your gift cards. And it creates a nice printable gift card that you can print at home, cut out and include in a birthday card or whatever.

There’s preset designs for ASOS and PlayStation, because I use those a lot, but also a custom one where you can add a retailer’s logo yourself.

You’re welcome.
